KF Shkëndija was formed on 27 August 1979 by Macedonian Albanians from Tetovo. Starting at the lowest division , the Municipal League, KF Shkëndija played their first match against FK Kosmos, winning 4–0. KF Shkendija was founded in 1979 because the Albanians in Yugoslavia felt the need for a club that would unite and support them. Shkendija was promoted to the third division in the 1979-80 season and was scheduled to be promoted to the first division by winning the second division title in the 1980-81 season, but the Yugoslav government warned that the club's actions would increase tensions between ethnic groups in Yugoslavia. Concerned about this, the club was forcibly disbanded. As North Macedonia declared independence in 1991 and the league was established in 1992, Shkendija began participating in the fourth division and won the first division for the first time in the 2010-11 season. In 2012, the team was on the verge of bankruptcy due to a financial crisis, but they overcame it with the help of Xherdan Shaqiri and others. Re-establishment In the 2010–11 season of the Macedonian First Football League the club won its first major championship with an unbeaten run of 16 games. On 20 May 2012, Shkëndija handed FK Vardar its first loss of the season with a 1–0 victory. During the 2012–13 season, Shkëndija was embroiled in financial difficulties and as a result, many of its players left the club earlier in the summer. The Shkëndija supporters, the Ballistët, began a social media campaign requesting Ecolog to take over Shkëndija.[6] Albanian international, Lorik Cana and Swiss international, Xherdan Shaqiri also joined the campaign with the supporters.[6] On 31 July 2013, Lazim Destani, father of Ecolog founder and chairman, Nazif Destani, announced Ecolog International will take charge of Shkëndija.
