Man Utd & Galatasaray included - Five potential destinations for Gianluigi Donnarumma

It seems unthinkable given his heroics on PSG’s journey to Champions League glory last season but Gianluigi Donnarumma could depart the French giants this summer. The Italian goalkeeper has failed to reach an agreement with PSG chiefs over a new contract despite months of negotiations and he’s entered the last year of his deal. It leaves the Ligue 1 champions with a major dilemma this summer over whether to cash in on Donnarumma or allow him to leave on a free when his contract expires - if an agreement can’t be found over new terms.
Donnaruuma was showered with praise by PSG boss Luis Enrique ahead of the Champions League final after man-of-the-match displays in both legs of their semi-final over Arsenal. “When someone is at the highest level, he must know that he will get the highest criticism as well as the highest praise,” Enrique said. “Donnarumma has a lot of experience, we are very happy with Gigio.” But the Italian’s future is incredibly uncertain with PSG on the verge of signing Lille’s highly-rated goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier. The 24-year-old aligns with PSG’s policy of signing the best French talents and Donnarumma could be demoted to second-choice, if he remains in Paris next season. Therefore, we’ve analysed five potential transfer destinations for the former AC Milan stopper with interest growing across Europe.
Five transfer destinations for Gianluigi Donnarumma
Manchester United
Manchester United made an enquiry about Donnarumma earlier this summer and are expected to revive their interest, according to the Telegraph. There’s been constant speculation around Andre Onana’s future this summer with the Cameroon goalkeeper enduring a difficult time at Old Trafford since joining from Inter Miami. Man Utd’s pursuit of Donnarumma will hinge on Onana’s future but there’s also major question marks over whether the Italian would be interested in moving to a club with no European football.
Chelsea
Chelsea’s goalkeeping issues were a major talking point last season with major doubts over Robert Sanchez. The 27-year-old made 32 starts in the Premier League but he was subject of significant criticism and Chelsea could upgrade on the Spaniard. The Blues have been strongly linked with Donnarumma and Stamford Bridge chiefs could view it as a market opportunity. One major issue is that Chelsea want to be stringent to their wage structure and Donnarumma’s demands could be prohibitive.
Galatasaray
The Super Lig champions are determined to sign a high-profile goalkeeper this summer and Donnarumma has been linked. Legendary goalkeeper Fernando Muselera departed Istanbul after 14 years and Galatasaray haven’t replaced him - you can read more about their goalkeeping situation here. After sealing Victor Osimhen’s return, Gala will now turn their attention to a new number one and they wouldn’t have a problem in affording Donnarumma. But would the PSG star want to move to the Turkish league at 26?
Manchester City
Manchester City’s goalkeeping department has been under the spotlight this summer with question marks over Ederson’s future. The Brazilian has been incredible for Pep Guardiola moving to Manchester in 2017 but he’s been linked with a departure as he’s entered the final year of his contract. Guardiola spent in excess of €30m to bring James Trafford back to the Etihad from Burnley and he will rival Ederson for the number one jersey. But if Ederson departs, Man City could revive their interest in Donnarumma.
Saudi Pro League
Saudi Pro League clubs hold a serious interest in Donnarumma and would be able to offer him an eye-watering salary to move to the Middle East. It’s been reported that Al Ittihad are willing to pay him an annual salary of €20m and that will be a tempting proposition for the PSG star. But it must still be viewed as incredibly unlikely that Donnarumma will turn his back on European football to head for the Middle East.
