Premier League market value update: Isak biggest winner, Foden's value plummets

Premier League market value update: Alexander Isak biggest winner, Phil Foden's value plummets

The Premier League - the most valuable league in the world - received 541 new market values in the latest Transfermarkt update. The division's total value actually fell by the sum of -€516.58 million, but the league remains by far the most valuable in world football at €11.30 billion. Newcastle's star striker Alexander Isak, Bournemouth's Real Madrid-bound centre-back Dean Huijsen, and Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly were among the biggest winners. Bournemouth also went up the most in squad value, whilst it was a damaging update for Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United, who all faced significant downgrades to their squad values.

No player rose in value more than Isak. The forward scored 23 Premier League goals this season, and his market value increases by +€20m to a new figure of €120m. Bournemouth centre-half Huijsen received the next biggest upgrade (+€18m to €60m), followed by Lewis-Skelly (+€17m to €45m), Sandro Tonali (+€15m to €60m), and Lucas Bergvall (+€13m to €38m). The most significant downgrade came for Manchester City's Phil Foden, who drops by -€30m to a new value of €100m. There were also big downgrades for some of his Sky Blues teammates; Erling Haaland loses his throne as the most valuable player in the world, dropping from €200m to €180m, whilst Ballon d'Or winner Rodri goes from €130m to €110m.

Alexander Isak biggest winner of the update

It would appear that Isak is the 'dream target' for almost every top club on the hunt for a striker this summer. However, Newcastle would be unlikely to let him go for anything less than an astronomical fee, and securing Champions League football may be enough to keep the Swede at St James' Park next season. Isak now stands as the third most valuable striker in the world - only behind Haaland (€180m), and Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé (€170m). Across the course of the season, Isak's market value has sky-rocketed from €75m to €120m. He is Newcastle's most valuable ever player, he's Sweden's most valuable ever player, and he's now the fourth most valuable star in the Premier League.

Bournemouth defender Huijsen has already sealed his €59m move to Real Madrid this summer. He has been one of the outstanding defenders in the Premier League this season at just 20 years of age, and has become a Spain international, and sees his market value rise by +€18m to €60m. Another young defender on the rise is Arsenal left-back Lewis-Skelly. The 18-year-old has enjoyed an incredible breakthrough season and plays way beyond his years. His performances against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals were incredible and he scored just 20 minutes into his England debut. He is a huge talent and a real player for the future; his market value now rises to €45m.

Phil Foden's poor season results in huge downgrade

This time last year, Man City playmaker Foden had just won the Premier League player of the year, the Transfermarkt player of the year, and had his market value hit a career-high of €150m. Few could have predicted the miserable 12 months that would follow for the 24-year-old. He failed to register a single goal or assist for England at Euro 2024, he has just nine Premier League goal contributions (goals + assists) this season, and has spent the past few months mainly on the City substitute's bench. As a result, his market value drops by -€30m to a new value of €100m. There's no doubt that Foden is still a superb talent. Most people expect him to bounce back, and at €100m he remains in the top 10 most valuable players in the Premier League.

Erling Haaland loses positions as world MVP

Foden wasn't the only Man City star to be affected this update. Haaland was the joint most valuable player in the world at €200m, but can no longer lay that claim, as the Norwegian drops by -€20m to €180m. By his astronomically high standards, it has been an underwhelming season, with just 22 Premier League goals and no trophies won. He still remains one of the most valuable players in world football. Ballon d'Or winner Rodri also saw his market value fall by -€20m. Man City have missed their midfield hub greatly this season after he suffered an ACL injury early on in the campaign, but he will turn 29 years old next month, and therefore drops to €110m. He remains by far the most valuable midfielder aged 28 or over.

Among the other biggest losers from the update were Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard and Liverpool forward Luis Díaz, who both dropped by -€15m to go to new market values of €85m and €70m respectively. Ødegaard has endured an underwhelming season with just three Premier League goals, and eight assists, whilst Díaz will turn 29 years old next January. There were also downgrades for Cole Palmer (-€10m to €120m), Dejan Kulusevski (-€10m to €50m), and Heung-min Son (-€10m to €20m).

Alexis Mac Allister becomes 1st PL South American to hit €100m

Alexis Mac Allister has arguably been the best midfielder in the Premier League this season, and has played a crucial role in Liverpool winning the title. The Argentine is rewarded with a +€10m upgrade and it means the 26-year-old hits a very special milestone. Mac Allister has now become the first ever South American Premier League player to hit €100m in market value. He is great on the ball and has been the heartbeat of Liverpool's team. He is also solid defensively, winning the ball back continually and playing with lots of energy in Arne Slot's midfield. He is now a history maker for South America.

Manchester City, Tottenham & Manchester United face big drops in squad value

No team suffered more in the May Premier League update than Manchester City when it comes to squad market value. The Sky Blues first trophy-less campaign since 2016/17 has resulted in many downgrades and a -€122m loss in squad value. Pep Guardiola's side now lose their status as the most valuable team in the world to Real Madrid, with  new squad value of €1.18 billion for Man City. There was also significant squad value downgrades for Tottenham (-€70m to €766m) and Manchester United (-€57m to €699m), while Bournemouth were the biggest winners with a +€25m increase in squad value.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
