Who is Ibrahima Sory Bangoura? Newcastle United among English clubs tracking Genk star

Genk are one of the most successful clubs in Europe for nurturing players before selling them to top five league clubs for substantial profits and Ibrahima Sory Bangoura could be the next gem. The Guinea midfielder remains relatively unknown but there’s huge excitement over his potential in Belgium and major English Premier League clubs have scouted him extensively this season.
Since moving to Genk from Johnson Academie in his homeland in 2022, Bangoura’s development has been eye-catching as he quickly acclimatised to the demands of European football. The towering midfielder was unquestionably raw when he arrived in Belgium but he’s polished his game significantly and his defensive acumen is incredible for his age - he's regularly been compared to former Genk star Wilfred Ndidi. The 21-year-old possesses the skillset to excel in a major European league and Genk’s resolve could be tested this summer.
Who is Ibrahima Sory Bangoura?
Genk’s scouting network discovered Bangoura in his native Guinea and their decision to take a low-risk chance on him has been inspired. After arriving in Belgium, Bangoura spent his first season at Genk’s B-team, Jong Genk, and amassed 50 appearances in the Challenger Pro League as he familiarised himself with his new surroundings. Thorsten Fink promoted the midfielder to the first-team this season and he’s excelled, making 35 appearances in all competitions. Bangoura’s physicality stands out and he’s exceptional at covering every blade of grass and winning possession back for Genk. There’s naturally still several areas that Bangoura needs to improve in his game but he’s made huge strides in his development across the last 18 months.
Bart Tamsyn, Transfermarkt’s Belgium football expert, said: “At over 6ft tall, Bangoura is a physically imposing presence and nailed down a starting role immediately after joining, but there’s still room for improvement in his game. He is tremendously strong 1vs1 and is among Belgium's best midfielders in terms of ball recoveries and breaking down opponents' attacks. But Bangoura struggles to make the right choice or keep the game simple after that, so he definitely needs an intelligent midfielder alongside him.
“As with Konstantinos Karetsas, Genk are trying not to overload the player. Thus, it was only in February that he was allowed three consecutive starts in the league for the first time. Genk are still hoping to keep him next season with the prospect of European football, as they too see that he is not yet a finished product and that his market value/transfer fee may only increase further.”
Premier League interest in Ibrahima Sory Bangoura
Every major European club scouts Belgium extensively given its history for providing a platform for future talents to excel. Several Premier League clubs are monitoring Bangoura but Newcastle United hold a genuine interest in the defensive midfielder. Eddie Howe’s three first-choice midfielders - Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali - have excelled this season but they need to strengthen their squad in preperation for European football next season. Bangoura has huge potential and his athleticism is perfectly suited to the Premier League but Genk sporting director Dimitri De Condé has denied suggestions of a €17 million release clause.
In an interview with Transfermarkt, De Conde said: “There's interest from English Premier League clubs. I've read articles online claiming there is a €17m release clause but that's not accurate.” Genk has produced some exceptional talent across the years Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Leandro Trossard, Leon Bailey, Thibaut Courtois and, notably, Kevin de Bruyne passing through the club. Across the last two seasons, Daniel Munoz joined Crystal Palace for €18 million, Mike Tresor to Burnley for €18m, Mike Penders to Chelsea for €20m and Bilal El Khannouss joined Leicester for €22.5m. Bangoura is regarded as one of the brightest talents currently at Genk and they will be looking for a fee in excess of €15m to sanction his sale this summer.
