Origins and Foundation: Rayo Vallecano was founded on May 29, 1924, in the Vallecas neighborhood of Madrid, initially as a modest neighborhood club. From its beginnings, it maintained a strong connection with the working-class and popular identity of the area, which has earned it the nickname "El Rayo" and the affection of its fans. Promotions and First Division: After decades in regional leagues and the Third Division, Rayo Vallecano achieved promotion to the First Division for the first time in the 1976-77 season. Since then, it has alternated between promotion and relegation, becoming a regular in the fight for survival every time it rises to the top flight. Successes and European Competitions: The most notable milestone came in the 2000-01 season, when Rayo Vallecano finished sixth in La Liga and qualified for the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League), becoming the first Madrid team after the majors to compete in European competition. Colors and Stadium: Their traditional white jersey with a red diagonal stripe symbolizes the blood and strength of the Vallecas neighborhood. They play their home games at the Vallecas Stadium (“La Bombonera del Manzanares”), with a capacity of approximately 14,700 spectators, where a passionate atmosphere prevails. Sports Policy and Fans: Known for their daring and attacking style of play, Rayo is known for giving opportunities to young talents and reinforcing themselves with hard-working players. Their fans are known for their “Ra-yo, Ra-yo!” chants and for filling the stadium even in difficult times. Current Situation: In the 2024-25 season, they competed in the First Division, focusing on consolidating their sporting project and maintaining their league status, always true to their humble spirit and closeness to the Vallecas neighborhood.
